A strategically novel synthetic method for the fluoroarylation of allenic ester was developed that enables the expedient construction of a host of beta-fluoroalkyl-containing cinnamate derivatives. The reaction proceeds through visible-light-promoted gold redox catalysis, occurs smoothly under very mild reaction conditions, accommodates a large variety of functional groups, and more importantly allows the incorporation of fluorine and aryl groups with excellent regio- and stereoselectivity. The concomitant activation mode for both the allene motif and the hydrogen fluoride is key for the success of the reaction.

A new dinuclear biphenylene bridged copper(II) complex: DNA cleavage under hydrolytic conditions

The dinucleating ligand, tpbpd (tetrapyridyl biphenylenediamine) forms a dicopper complex with practically no electronic coupling between the two copper (II) centres. The EPR spectrum of the complex is consistent with coordination of each copper ion to two nitrogens of the binuclear ligand. Cyclic voltammogram of the complex also reveals that the two copper (II) centres have identical ligating environment. This dimeric copper (II) complex is found to be a very efficient catalyst for the cleavage of plasmid DNA in the absence of any added cofactor. The amount of conversion of supercoiled form (Form I) of plasmid to the open circular form (Form II) depends on the concentration of the complex as well as the duration of incubation of the complex with DNA. The maximum rate of conversion of the supercoiled form to the nicked circular form at pH 7.5 in the presence of 150 muM of the complex is found to be 1.8 × 10-3 s-1.

Lectin-like protein fractions in lactic acid bacteria isolated from chickens

Agglutination of fifty bacterial strains isolated from gastric- intestinal tract of chickens with yeasts treated with glutaraldehyde and glycine was assayed to study possible adhesion mechanisms to epithelia. After treatment with lipase and metaperiodate modifications bacterial superficies and/or liberation of some structures produced an unspecific interaction with increase in the yeast agglutination and hemagglutination. The optimal conditions of work were: pH 6-7, Ca2+ 1 mM, Mg2+ 2 mM and 37-42 C.

In the present work, we describe structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies on 3-aminoazetidin-2-one derivatives, which have led to the identification of 3b, and expand these studies to elucidate the principal structural and stereochemical features needed to achieve effective NAAA inhibition. Investigations on the influence of the substitution at the beta-position of the 2-oxo-3-azetidinyl ring as well as on the effect of size and shape of the carbamic acid ester side chain led to the discovery of 3ak, a novel inhibitor of human NAAA that shows an improved physicochemical and drug-like profile relative to 3b. This favourable profile, along with the structural diversity of the carbamic acid chain of 3b, identify this compound as a promising new tool to investigate the potential of NAAA inhibitors as therapeutic agents for the treatment of pain and inflammation.
