Mono- and di-N-alkylated derivatives of 1,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-2-amino-2- deoxy-beta-D-glucose (alkyl = methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, benzyl) were synthesised by the reductive alkylation of per-O-acetyl-d- glucosamine. (N-ethyl, N-propyl, N-butyl, N-pentyl and N-hexyl)-1,3,4,6-tetra-O- acetyl-2-amino-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucoses were deacetylated in order to attempt an enzymatic phosphorylation. Metal-metal versus metal-ligand bonding in dimetal compounds with tridentate ligands

Reaction of a ‘VCl2·nTHF’ solution, prepared by the reduction of VCl3(THF)3 with NaBEt3H in THF, and Lidpa (dpa = the anion of 2,2′-dipyridylamine) in a mixture of THF/toluene at reflux temperature yields the bioctahedral V2(dpa)4·THF (1) compound. A similar reaction performed in THF at 0C gave [V2(dpa)3(mu-Cl)2Li2(THF)6][BEt3H] (2), in which a dpa ligand adopts a novel ‘doubly-chelating/bridging’ coordination mode. Compound 2 reacts with CH2Cl2 giving V2(dpa)3Cl2·2CH2Cl2 (3), a valence delocalized V(II)···V(6III) bioctahedral complex. In all three complexes, the formation of four additional metal-ligand bonds is favored over the formation of a V-V bond. The V···V separations are 3.038(2), 3.024(2) and 3.091(2) A? for 1-3, respectively. Crystal data are: compound 1, space group P2/n a = 13.102(2), b = 9.294(2), c = 16.510(4) A?, beta = 98.98(2), V = 1985.7(6) A?3 and Z = 2; compound 2, space group I2/a, a = 19.4674(8), b = 14.390(1), c = 24.219(2) A?, beta = 92.954(7), V = 6775.4(7) A?3 and Z = 2; compound 3, space group P21/c, a = 12.0853(8), b = 18.679(2), c = 16.709(2), beta = 109.98(1), V = 3544.9(6) A?3 and Z = 4. Hydrothermal synthesis, crystal structures and effect of non bonding interactions in crystal packing of two mixed-ligand metal complexes with glycolato and 2,2?-dipiridylamine and with benzilato and imidazole

Two new mixed-ligand complexes [Fe(HG)2(dipyam)] (1) (HG = glycolato and dipyam = 2,2?-dipyridylamine) and [Cu(HB) 2(im)2]·2H2O (2) (HB = benzilato and im = imidazole) have been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterised by X-ray diffraction. In both cases the metallic centre is in an octahedral environment, strongly distorted in 2 (4+2 coordination). The alpha-hydroxycarboxylato ligands (glycolato or benzilato) present different coordinative behaviour, bidentade chelate through the hydroxyl oxygen and one carboxy oxygen in 1 and through the two oxygen atoms of the carboxylate group in 2. The complexes are extended into 2D frameworks through hydrogen bonding and pi…pi or C-H…pi interactions. The complexes were also characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopy and room temperature magnetic measurements.

Enzymatic desymmetrization of 3-arylglutaric acid anhydrides

Optically active (R)- and (S)-3-arylglutaric acid monoesters 3 were synthesized in quantitative yields and good stereoselectivities by lipase-catalyzed desymmetrization of the corresponding 3-arylglutaric anhydrides 2 with alcohols. It was observed that the stereochemical outcome of the reaction was influenced by the substituents present on the aromatic ring. The influence of the enzyme, alcohol, and solvent was systematically examined. Absolute configurations of the monoesters 3 were assigned by chemical correlation to corresponding lactones 4.

A double-click approach to the protecting group free synthesis of glycoconjugates

The use of a bi-functional linker, containing an alkyne and an alkene, allows the protecting group free conjugation of reducing sugars to thiols via a double click process. Firstly the linker is attached to the sugar via one-pot glycosyl azide formation and Cu-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition. Photochemical thiol-ene click reaction then allows conjugation to a range of thiols, including cysteine residues of peptides.
