An effective and sensitive method for the analysis of 1,4-dioxane in water has been available since 2008 (EPA 522). This method is increasingly being applied to investigate the distribution of 1,4-dioxane in the aquatic environment. However, there is a need for more information about the possible occurrence of 1,4-dioxane in groundwater in Europe in general, and in Germany in particular, where virtually no data have been collected so far. The possible contamination of groundwater with 1,4-dioxane is of relevance to Germany because up to 70% of Germany’s drinking water is obtained from groundwater and about 17% from river bank filtrate, which contains variable proportions of groundwater. The aim of the present study is to investigate selected and representative groundwater sites in Germany that have suspected occurrences of 1,4-dioxane. Five of the sites are well known for their volatile chlorinated hydrocarbon contamination, two sites have representative landfill leachate characteristics, and one site is negatively impacted by a detergent manufacturing plant. The presence of 1,4-dioxane was observed at each of these sites. Measured maximum concentration values ranged from 0.15 mug/L to 152 mug/L. An aquifer containing a trichloroethylene (TCE) plume with 1,4-dioxane as a co-contaminant was investigated in more detail. A perfect match was found between the concentrations of 1,4-dioxane and TCE in the vertical and horizontal distribution profiles. The results indicate the necessity for investigating groundwater contamination by 1,4-dioxane at sites with known 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA) and TCE contaminations, in landfill leachates, and at sites of detergent production.

Foods are complex multi-component systems which are composed of volatile and non-volatile substances. The flavour profile of a food is an important criterion for the selection of our foodstuffs. The main objective of this study was the clarification of the complex relationships of the flavour release as a function of the composition of the food matrix at molecular level. Therefore the influence of matrix effects onto the odorants partition coefficients in oil-water model systems and a custard sample were investigated. The studies included a series of lactones, ester and alcohols (gamma- and delta-octalactone, gamma- and delta-nonalactone, gamma- and delta-decalactone, ethyl hexanoate, 3-methyl-1-butanol and 2-phenylethanol). The partition coefficients were determined using static headspace gas chromatography (SH-GC). The results indicated that the custard/air partition coefficients of selected odorants are located between the water/air- and miglyol/air partition coefficients. Furthermore the mass transfer rates of selected odorants were investigated in custard- and milk powder-water samples. The values of the mass transfer rate were found higher in milk powder/water systems than in custard model. Nevertheless the results indicated that the viscosity of the matrix did not significantly influence the values of mass transfer rate of selected flavour compounds.

As part of a program aimed to obtain antioxidants able to interact with cell membrane, edaravone (EdV, 3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-5-one), a well-known free radical scavenger, has been modified by alkylation at its allylic position (4) with a C-18 hydrocarbon chain, and the increased lipophilicity has been determined towards the interaction with liposomes. The obtained derivative has been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) methods in order to characterize its lowest energy conformers and predict its antioxidant properties with respect to the parent compound EdV. The in vitro antioxidant activity of C18-edaravone was studied by means of the alpha,alpha-diphenyl-beta-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay and in lipid peroxidation experiments performed on artificial lipid membranes using water-soluble as well as lipid-soluble radical initiators. Moreover, since oxidative stress is involved in numerous retinal degenerative diseases, the ability of C18-edaravone to contrast 2,2-azobis (2-amidinopropane hydrochloride) (AAPH)-induced cell death was assessed in adult retinal pigmented epithelium (ARPE-19) cells. Overall, the results demonstrated that the newly synthesized molecule has a high affinity for lipid membrane, increasing the efficacy of the unmodified edaravone under stress conditions.
