The nitrate ion shows uni- or (semi-)bidentate coordination, excepting the complex AgNO3:P(o-tol)3:dpca (1:1:1) (dpca = bis(2-picolyl)amine) where the anion is uncoordinated, the donor dpca being a pincer-tridentate. The complex AgNO3:Pcy3:tpy (2:2:1), also reported, is dinuclear with a bridging unidentate nitrate and a terpyridine, the latter bridging through its central ring, with the peripheral rings forming chelates to either side, whereas the complex AgNO3:PPh3:tpy (1:2:1) is ionic with a five-coordinate silver, bonded to tridentate tpy and two phosphines.

A novel feature of the first complex is the presence of a dinuclear anionic adduct, [K2(PF6)6] 4-, in which the two potassium centres are bridged by two fluorides from different hexafluorophosphate ions forming a K2F2 bridging unit and by two KFPFK bridging moieties.

Two binuclear complexes of cobalt(III) have been prepared with 3,3?,4,4?-tetrahydroxy-5,5?-di-tert-butylbenzaldazine (H4thBu) as bis(catecholate) ligand and two different ancillary ligands, 2,2?-bipyridine (bpy) or 2,2?-dipyridylamine (dpa). These compounds were characterized by 1H NMR spectra, electrochemical measurements and UV-Vis spectra. In one case, [Co2(dpa)4(thBu)]2+, electrochemical oxidation of the complexes occurs at the bridges as two closely spaced one-electron couples (E1/2 = 1 mV and 168 mV versus Fc/Fc+). Chemical oxidation of [Co2(dpa)4(thBu)]2+ using Ag+ is observed to occur as a stepwise two-electron process forming [Co2(dpa)4(thBuCat,SQ)]3+ or [Co2(dpa)4(thBuSQ,SQ)]4+ by UV-Vis spectrum. However, [Co2(bpy)4(thBu)]2+ shows no change in electronic spectrum under the same conditions of oxidation. This illustrates the dependence of redox properties of the binuclear Co(III) complexes on the nature of the nitrogen-donor ancillary ligands. In this report we discuss the effect of two different nitrogen-donor ancillary ligands on the0 oxidation behavior of binuclear Co(III) complexes.

Upgrading pyrolysis oil by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a promising route for the production of advanced biofuels. The proper reaction conditions and catalysts are important for the success of this process. Previously our research group investigated the ratio of Zn and Pd on the synergistic effect for HDO bio-oil upgrading. This present research focuses on determining the optimal reaction conditions for HDO conversion of pyrolysis oil produced from pine sawdust. Temperatures of 150, 200 and 250 C and hydrogen pressures of 1.38, 2.76 and 4.14 MPa were evaluated. Syngas, liquids and coke were the primary products evaluated. Syngas was characterized using a Gas chromatography (GC). The liquids were characterized using a Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Increasing reaction temperature resulted in increased coke yields. Treatment at 250 C and 1.38 MPa resulted in the highest hydrocarbon content (6.06%). The treatment at 200 C and 1.38 MPa produced the largest amounts of hydrocarbons in C6-C12 range (5.07%). The physicochemical characterizations further support the GCMS results. Syngas analysis revealed that higher hydrogen pressure leads to increased hydrogen consumption and results in more oxy-compounds conversion to hydrocarbons. The syngas analysis also supports the liquid analysis result.

Reaction of 2,2?-dipyridylamine (DPA) with hexafluorophosphoric acid (HPF6) in methanol generates white rod-shaped crystals of HDPA.PF6,H2O.
