We prepare a GlcNAc-1,6-anhydroMurNAc-fluorophore conjugate and, using live E. coli spheroplasts, quantitatively analyze its transport by AmpG and inhibition of this process by a competing substrate. Further, we use this transport assay to evaluate the function of two AmpG homologues from Pseudomonas aeruginosa and show that P. aeruginosa AmpG (Pa-AmpG) but not AmpP (Pa-AmpP) transports this probe substrate. We corroborate these results by AmpC induction assays with Pa-AmpG and Pa-AmpP. This fluorescent AmpG probe and spheroplast-based transport assay will enable improved understanding of PG recycling and of permeases from the major facilitator superfamily of transport proteins and may aid in identification of AmpG antagonists that combat AmpC-mediated resistance toward beta-lactam antibiotics.

The polymer-bound dipyridylamide ligand showed excellent selectivity toward Hg2+ and Pd2+, allowing the selective extraction of both divalent metal ions over a broad range of concentrations from complex mixtures. Due to the stability of the resulting complexes, high loadings of the material with both metals were achieved. To elucidate the chemistry of complexation, X-ray structures of compound (I) as well as ESI-MS investigations of the complex of I with Pd2+ were performed. I crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/c, and forms 1:1 complexes with Pd2+ under conditions identical to the SPE experiments.

More importantly, the method enables highly desirable one-pot glycosylation reactions to take place, thus allowing efficient syntheses of disaccharides and simple O-glycosylated sugars in high overall yields without the need for separation or purification of the alpha-glycosyl chloride donors. This method will be especially useful for direct glycosylation reactions using glycosyl chloride donors that are unstable upon separation and purification.

This study presents the influence of various substituents on the photophysical features of heteroleptic copper(I) complexes bearing both N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and dipyridylamine (dpa = dipyridylamine skeleton corresponding to ligand L1) ligands. The luminescent properties have been compared to our recently reported archetypal blue emitting [Cu(IPr)(dpa)][PF6] complex. The choice of the substituents on both ligands has been guided to explore the effect of the electron donor/acceptor and “push-pull” on the emission wavelengths and photoluminescence quantum yields. A selection of the best candidates in terms of their photophysical features were applied for developing the first blue light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) based on copper(I) complexes. The device analysis suggests that the main concern is the moderate redox stability of the complexes under high applied driving currents, leading to devices with moderate stabilities pointing to a proof-of-concept for further development. Nevertheless, under low applied driving currents the blue emission is stable, showing performance levels competitive to those reported for blue LECs based on iridium(III) complexes. Overall, this work provides valuable guidelines to tackle the design of enhanced NHC copper complexes for lighting applications in the near future.

Three new triply bridged dinuclear copper(II) compounds containing carboxylato bridges, [Cu2(mu-CH3COO-kappa-O1,O2)2(mu-CH3COO-kappa-O1)(dpyam)2](BF4) (1), [Cu2(mu-CH2CH3COO-kappa-O1,O2)(mu-OH)(mu-OH2)(bpy)2](ClO4)2 (2) and [Cu2(mu-CH3COO-kappa-O1,O2)(mu-OH)(mu-OH2)(phen)2](ClO4)2 (3) (in which dpyam = di-2-pyridylamine, bpy = 2,2-bipyridine, phen = phenanthroline), have been synthesized in order to investigate the magnetic super-exchange pathway between coupled copper(II) centres. All three compounds display a distorted square-pyramidal arrangement around each copper(II) ion with a CuN2O3 chromophore. Compound 1 has three acetato bridges, two of which connect each square pyramid at two equatorial sites in a triatomic bridging mode and the third acetato bridge acts at the apical site in the monoatomic bridging mode. The structures of compounds 2 and 3 are mutually similar. In each dinuclear unit, both copper(II) ions are linked at two equatorial positions through a hydroxo bridge and a triatomic carboxylato bridge and at the axial position through a water molecule. The magnetic susceptibility measurements, measured from 5 to 300 K, revealed an antiferromagnetic interaction between the Cu(II) ions in compound 1 and a ferromagnetic interaction for compounds 2 and 3 with singlet-triplet energy gaps (J) of -56, 149 and 120 cm-1, for compounds 1, 2 and 3, respectively.
