Abstract: Conjugates of 3,4,6-tri-?-acetyl-N-acetylglucosamine and tetraacetyl glucopyranose with alkyl phosphates were synthesized. The dependence of their antibacterial and antituberculosis activities on the length of the alkyl substituent at the phosphate group was found. The conjugates with a decyl substituent exhibited in vitro the highest antituberculosis activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv (MIC 3?mug/mL) but the weakest effect towards Streptococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus (?MIC 125 mug/mL). Vice versa, the conjugates with a cetyl substituent demonstrated the highest antibacterial activity in vitro towards S. aureus and B. cereus (MIC 16 mug/mL) but showed the lowest antituberculosis activity (MIC 12 mug/mL) among the compounds under study.

Polymer brushes (PBs) have been used as supports for the immobilization of palladium complexes on silicon surfaces. The polymers were grown by surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and postdecorated with dipyridylamine (dpa) ligands. The pendant dpa units were in turn complexed with [Pd(OAc)2] to afford hybrid catalytic surfaces. A series of catalytic samples of various thicknesses (ca. 20-160 nm) and associated palladium loadings (ca. 10-45 nmol cm-2) were obtained by adjusting the SI-ATRP reaction time and characterized by ellipsometry, X-ray reflectivity, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). ICP-MS revealed a near-linear relationship between thickness of the polymer brush and palladium content, which confirmed the robustness of the preparation and postmodification sequence presented herein, rendering possible the creation of functional architectures with predefined catalytic potential. The activities of the catalytic PBs were determined by systematically exploring a full range of substrate-to-catalyst ratios in a model palladium(0)-catalyzed reaction. Quantitative transformations were observed for loadings down to 0.03 mol % and a maximum turnover number (TON) of around 3500 was established for the system. Comparison of the catalytic performances evidenced a singular influence of the thickness on conversions and TONs. The limited recyclability of the hairy catalysts has been attributed to palladium leaching.

Two extended coordination frameworks of CdII-squarate complexes with the formulas [Cd2(C4O4) 2.5(H2O)4](dpaH)¡¤ 1.5(H2O) (1) and [Cd(C4O4)(dpa)(H2O)] (2) (dpa = 2,2?-dipyridylamine) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Structural determination reveals that compound 1 consists of a free monoprotonated 2,2?-dipyridylamine ion (dpaH+) and a two-dimensional (2D) anionic, layered framework, {[Cd2(C4O4) 2.5(H2O)4]-}, which is formed with two anti-prismatic square-boxes as the fundamental building unit through the connection between CdII ions and hybrid mu1,2,3-, mu1,2,3,4-squarates. Each square-box acts as a host for the inclusion of one pyridine ring of dpaH+. Adjacent dpaH+ cations are then self-assembled by the parallel alignment of the other pyridine ring of dpaH+ to complete a 3D network with one-dimensional (1D) channels intercalated by water molecules. Compound 2 contains a distorted octahedral CdII center coordinated by two squarates, two waters and one dpa ligand to form a 1D 2-legged, ladder-like framework by the connection of a [Cd(dpa)(mu2-H2O)]24+ dimeric unit and a mu1,2-squarate. Weak pi-pi stacking interaction and hydrogen bonds of N-H…O, O-H…O and C-H…O among the squarate, water and dpa ligands provide additional intra- and intermolecular interactions on the stabilization of these two polymeric frameworks. The donor shows higher reactivity than analogous benzoate, p-methoxybenzoate and p-cyano-o-methoxybenzoate donors. In glycosylation reactions with o-methoxybenzoate donors, the yields of disaccharide products were good to excellent for various glycosyl acceptors, including a carbohydrate-based secondary alcohol. Furthermore, beta-selective mannosylation was achieved with a Crich-type donor at 0 C to ambient temperature, without donor preactivation. The donor was also used for the first step of a one-pot two-step glycosylation to obtain a trisaccharide; the second coupling involved activation of a thioglycoside with NIS/TMSOTf (NIS = N-iodosuccinimide). We believe that this offers a good alternative to current protocols.
